Book excerpt: Excerpt from Williams' Cincinnati Directory, City Guide and Business Mirror, or Cincinnati in 1856 Directories are in their characterlocal, calculated principally (we might almost say solely) to benefit the particular locality which they reprissent, they should, therefore, depend for their support, upon the citizens of the locality represented; consisting of cards of ad dress and business, all properly termed advertisements, and such as should be paid for by each individual represented, (all are directly benefitled by their publication) they should re ceive their support from that source, and not from the sale of them to the comparatively few, who to benefit the public, would purchase a Directory, when by so doing they would pay equally as much for their neighbor's advertisement and convenience as for their own yet, while each individual is at or not to pay for the insertion Of his card, a proper distinction should be tion, so that those who pay, may receive the full benefit of the publication, while others are allowed the privilege, the act is their own) Of representing to the public, in connec their card, that they are not willing to pay for that which their own individual nd the public good requires, thus making of the work A mirror in which each individual may see himself, and havlz a partial view of other citizens, according to their own aepresenlation.
