Book excerpt: This study explored whether and how teachers' knowledge of content reading strategies contributes to gains in students' science achievement and reading comprehension. The author used a quasi-experimental methodology in which sixth grade science achievement gains over a year were impacted by teachers' use of content reading strategies. The study also examined the impact cognitive coaches had on teachers implementing the strategies. The author found that the teachers' use of content reading strategies was significantly related to student achievement gains in the experimental groups' classrooms. Ethnicity was also found to be a significant factor in the science achievement. Teachers reported a significant gain in the number and variety of content reading strategies used in their instruction.
