Book excerpt: This book is a tentative effort for Darren to come out of the shadows to share his feelings, beliefs and ideas through his art and poetry with a much larger audience. Much of the poetry in this collection was composed while incarcerated and while somewhat autobiographical, it is refl ective of not only some of his personal struggles, but with the struggles of the downtrodden as well, specifically the descendants of Africans and Native Americans. Identifying with the underdog, his poetry is both politically motivated and spiritually grounded in self-improvement and while sometimes angrily provocative and controversial, his poetry expresses love and hope towards a better future.
