Sequel to the author's Spanish Sea: The Gulf of Mexico in North American Discovery, 1500-1685 (1985)--and a third volume is planned so that the completed trilogy will span 300 years and embrace the entire Gulf--this study of exploration rivalry takes into account what is often not considered and has lead to erroneous conclusions--the explorers' limited geographical knowledge and the consequent mistakes. Maps supplement the text, but the basic thrust is narration rather than cartography.
