Normally such an idea would be fantasy, but knowing that werewolves exist, obviously vampires would do as well. Hancox remembers his father, who was also a police officer; mention a strange case during World War II. At the time, his father was tracking down a serial killer during the Blitz and when he was finally cornered, Hancox's dad watched him, caught on barbed wire, burn up as the dawn light came over the horizon. Somehow Hancox thinks the two cases are connected and races against time to hunt the killer down before more bodies turn up.
