Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to gain perspectives from school staff regarding the use of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention ®, to include the use of restraint and seclusion. The findings of the study revealed several themes shared by a special education teachers, a paraprofessional, and administrators regarding their views and experiences being trained in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention ® and using restraint and seclusion. The perspectives of the five educators were obtained through in-depth interviews and surveys. Themes included training needs for educators and the level of confidence of those who have been trained in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention ®, the importance of building policy governing the use of restraint and seclusion as well as the support needed from administration, and the lack of crisis response teams within the participating schools.
