Book excerpt: Letters on Sport in Eastern Bengal is a snapshot from the age of the British Empire, when hunting big game was considered a fun weekend's pursuit for a gentleman, rather than the extinction-threatening irresponsible behaviour we see it as today. It is still a fascinating look into the past, as experienced first hand by the author. Frank B. Simson was a British civil servant working in East Bengal, which later became a territory of Pakistan and is now known as Bangladesh. The purpose of this book was to provide other civil servants sent to Bengal an overview of the sporting opportunities available to them in the region, and by "sporting opportunities," the author is referring to hunting opportunities. The book is composed of a series of letters written by Simson on a wide range of hunting-related topics, which the author wrote by referring to his personal diary as well as his experiences in the field. In all, sixty-one letters are presented in this collection. Topics discussed include how to determine a district's capabilities for good hunting, shooting games, hunting hogs, hunting elephants, hunting tigers, and a host of other chapters on hunting specific animals. Frank B. Simson's Letters on Sport in Eastern Bengal is an interesting volume on a number of levels. It is probably most useful today as a historical snapshot of the attitudes of British civil servants in colonial territories, but may also appeal to the reader simply interested in tales of big game hunting.
