The area of Puducherry Union Territory is approximately around 482 km². The Puducherry Union Territory comprises Puducherry (approximate area is 293 km²), Karaikal (approximate area is 160 km²), Mahe (approximate area is 9 km²) and Yanam (approximate area is 30 km²). The Puducherry and Karaikal regions are surrounded by the state of Tamilnadu, whereas Mahe is surrounded by the state of Kerala and Yanam by the state of Andra Pradesh. Earlier, the Puducherry state was called Pondicherry.
