Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the perceptions and effectiveness of heterogeneous groupings of students in the secondary, English Language Arts (ELA) classroom. As research was developing around non-tracked systems and inclusive classrooms in the early 1990's, the concept of blended, or mixed-level groupings became popularized. Now, in 2017, this is a model for inclusivity, equity, and access for many secondary schools in the United States, but there is little solid research supporting either side of the issue. This research focuses on one high school's experience with mixed-level English classes, specifically on how they are perceived by students, their overall effectiveness, and the factors that contribute to their successes and shortcomings. ... The results of this research indicate that multi-level classes, in a system that perpetuates tracking from elementary school, is problematic. However, there are promising aspects to there [sic] uses as well. Results from this study will provide information that schools can use in assessing and revising when and how they use heterogeneous classrooms.
