Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Analysis of the Derivative Words in the English Language The first edition of this work, was the first effort of the Author, and it is believed to be the first attempt to present the component parts of English derivative words, in their distinctive character, and exhibit their combination in any thing like system. The practicability of the work had been under consideration, and the materials principally collected, many years before the plan was fully carried out. The first edition was at length presented, and notwithstanding its imperfections, has fairly settled the question, as to the importance of the plan proposed, and the course to be pursued in acquiring a knowledge of derivative words. The experiment has been made, and repeated under such circumstances, that the Author, from his own observation of facts, will now guaranty, to communicate more knowledge of derivative words in the English Language, to any class of English Scholars over twelve years of age, in twelve weeks, than ever was, or ever can be communicated, in the ordinary way, to those of a similar age, in twelve months.
