Book excerpt: The thesis presents an investigation of the application of the finite element method to the analysis of tall building structures. The work is divided into two sections; development of a computer system to analyse structures by the finite element method, and the application of this system to the analysis of tall buildings. The computer program is written in a general manner so that it can be used as a basic system for the finite element investigation of other structural forms. It will operate on a medium-sized computer having a disc backing store. There are few limitations and no knowledge of its method of operation and allocation of storage is necessary. A general substructure facility is incorporated which allows the production and use of generations of substructures. Application of the system to the analysis of tall buildings is presented. Comparison is made between a number of different elements of the displacement formulation. A study is made of the mesh patterns.required in order to provide an accurate and efficient solution. Experimental tests on a number of perspex models are described and results from these are presented and compared with theoretical values. A computer program for the frequency analysis of structures is presented. Mass substructure techniques are developed and "Wavefront Methods" are extended to the storage and condensation of mass matrices. Results from the program are compared with experimentally determined frequencies of two tall-building models.
