Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between supervisor influence tactics and employee resistance tactics. Eight hypotheses were tested; four of the hypotheses postulated a relationship between influence tactics (rational persuasion, inspirational appeal, pressure, and personal appeal) and constructive resistance (attempting to understand an influence request), while the other four hypotheses postulated a relationship between the four influence tactics and dysfunctional resistance (refusal to comply with an influence request). Hypotheses were mostly unsupported, possibly due to work environment of the participants and homogeneity of the sample population. The results of the study indicated that the use of pressure was positively correlated with constructive resistance and positively correlated with dysfunctional resistance, while personal appeals were positively correlated with constructive resistance.
