In particular, the current research study examined the relationship between moral judgment maturity and aspects of friendship intimacy in an adolescent sample, with the secondary aim of replicating and possibly explaining the early adolescent gender difference in moral judgment maturity favoring females found by a previous study (Garmon et al., 1996). The current sample consisted of 104 students representing the sixth, eighth, and tenth grades from Midwestern inner-city middle and high schools. Though the present study failed to replicate the gender difference in moral judgment maturity found by Garmon et al. (1996), a significant relationship was found between moral judgment maturity and friendship intimacy, particularly in the 6th grade sub-sample. A cognitive delay evidenced in the current sample may have attenuated the results and limited the comparison to the previous results of Garmon et al. (1996).
