Book excerpt: The Higher education has largely been kept out of the benevolent support from the government and lesser cost effective. When it comes to Higher education for woman, it becomes even more regressive since it is often been judged in terms of social security, higher opportunity cost and comparatively more restrictive mobility of woman to undergo learning at far off Academic Centre. The plight of the women of a developing nation can be understood with the fact that there exists significantly higher rate of drop-outs at the level of higher education. For example the drop-out rates in primary, elementary and secondary level are 26.45%, 49.95% and 61.74% respectively in the year 2005-06. (GOI 2005-06). In 2008-09 however these rates are reduced to 24.93% in primary level, and 42.5% in the elementary level. The PESTLE analysis of Higher Education for Women though appears to be bright however; the current situation in many countries including India is not so encouraging and eventually, attracts the attention of policy makers, academicians and thinkers towards the philanthropy of Distance Education System. In order to achieve fuller utilization of the potential of Distance Education System specifically and continuing non-conventional education in general, it is felt significant to understand the economics of distance education. Through this paper, an attempt is been made to track the Economics of Higher Education through Distance Education that can be proved to be boon for working scholars and women who have little access to education after a certain level.
