Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Journal of Photography, 1890, Vol. 37 As it is perfectly well known that hydrochloric acid has little or no effect on glass, I think I have demonstrated the facts as to the action of mercury and such mercuric compounds as are used in toning. That action may be partial, but in no way can the efiect ever be as it has been described. The imperceptible vapourisation of mercury at ordinary temperatures has no effect on ordinary glass, as ma be proved by the fact that a wooden bowl of mercury, holding a out 120 pounds, which has been in use for over twenty years, and when covered it was so by a bit of plate glass which, for a wonder, was not broken, when I examined it to-day, I found that the surface, save for accidental scratches, is just as it came from the factory.
