Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifteenth Report of the Bureau of Archives for the Province of Ontario, 1918-1919 The valuable manuscripts, a facsimile of which forms the body of this volume, date from 1743 to 1744 and were written at Lorette by the Rev. Pierre Potier, whose name is inseparably associated with the Mission to the Huron Indians in the Sandwich and Detroit district. The existence of the manuscripts has been known for many years and those competent to judge of their merits have place a high estimate on their varied contents. Their publication had been sought for by more than one public institution of Canada and the United States of America without success. Fortunately, the difficulties in the way were removed and the Ontario Archives is now in a position to give to the public three of Potier's manuscripts, the most important and complete of his writings. Considerable interest was taken recently in the well-guarded treasures in the Archives of St. Mary's College, Montreal, by the Toronto press. One may appreciate and sympathize, an editorial writer stated, with the pride of the guardian and the necessity for protecting. Precious original documents. At the same time, the chief use of documents is to be read, and our Canadian records have too small a circle of readers. At the time this was written, the publication of the Potier manuscripts had been arranged for; were passing through the press, and are now available for a wide circle of readers, interested in the beginnings of Ontario history.
