Book excerpt: In the next two issues of Dredging Research, the progress of a LEDO-supported research project using gut fluids collected from large benthic worms to assess the bioavailable fraction of contaminants associated with dredged materials will be reported. Part 1 consists of some of the background to bioaccumulation and gut fluid extractions and introduces a research effort currently under way by members of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Environmental Laboratory at ERDC, Vicksburg, MS. Part 2 will present research results and discuss how they relate to current Corps guidelines for assessment of dredged materials.
